Traditionally, the hook raised on a turning scraper has been the burr left by grinding. Unfortunately, such a burr has serious faults, being jagged, fragile and somewhat unpredictable in its form. The Veritas Burnisher eliminates these problems by forming a sharp, controlled, longer lasting "hook" on the edge of the scraper which gives a much improved surface finish on the work. The burnisher consists of a flat, rigid base which can be screwed to the bench or held in a vice. It is equipped with a conical tungsten pin which does the burnishing and a steel pin which acts as a fulcrum around which the scraper is rotated Different hole positions are used for various sizes of tools. The sequence of operations is to first grind the scraper end at an angle of 70° to 75°, then remove any burr formed on a lapping plate and then form the final edge on the burnisher. This is an especially useful tool for the heavy section scrapers, such as those designed by Richard Raffan and others, as well as the more traditional round and square nosed designs.
